We are all back home safe and sound.  It was a great trip, and I am proud of the team members and all they accomplished during the week.  God was indeed good to us, showering us with traveling mercies, and giving us the opportunity to serve Him in very unique ways.

My heart is aching for the orphanage.  It was hard not being able to go back every day and hold and play with the kids.  I am praying that God will open up the opportunity for me to return in February of next year.  Emma has expressed her desire to return as well.  She shared that she too was disappointed to not have more time with the kids.  However we both appreciated the opportunities God gave us to meet all the families we served in Tecpan delivering food and clothing, and to have the chance to participate in a wheelchair distribution.

It was good to see Maria and her family again during our food distribution in Tecpan.  We first met them when Dick took us there in February.  Maria is a widow and mother of 5 children.  Lately she has been suffering from headaches, induced, she believes, by the stress of not being able to provide for her family.  She does her best, selling her beautiful tapestries, but it is not enough.  The headaches make it more difficult for her to concentrate on her work.  There are times when she has no food to give her kids, and this absolutely upsets her.  Members of our team gave her what money we had, along with some rice and beans to supplement a strictly tortilla diet, which should last a few months and ease the burden for a moment.  But to think that she knows that it is a temporary fix is painful.  I have been praying that somehow, someway she will find a better way to provide for her family without having to ask for or accept outside help, which I could tell was difficult for her.  She has a deep, genuine love of Jesus, and her faith is stronger than most people I know.  I can only hope that God will find a way to help her and her family.

I also pray for Moises, my dear little friend at the Hermano Pedro orphanage in Antigua.  We gave him a camera, and he was delighted.  The only problem is that within hours it had been taken from him.  I wonder if it would have been better to have not brought it at all in the first place.  While it was exciting to see his reaction, and to watch him joyfully use it, I’m wondering if it was the best decision.  He has already had enough disappointment in his young life.  Was it a good idea to give him something that would most certainly be taken away?  I can only pray that Dick will find a way to get it back to him.  Once again, have I imposed my own desires on a helpless victim causing him unnecessary hurt?

It is exciting to think that we will be sending another team to Guatemala in June of 2010.  Originally I had planned on an every-other year format, but Chris Mooney and the team felt that St. John’s could handle a yearly visit to Guatemala.  It looks like we already have lined up our adult portion of the team, beginning with the strong possibility of Fr. Scot and his wife Chitra serving on the team.  I also have to delegate much of the work to other people, since this last trip took more than 2 years of planning, and seriously took away time from the other ministries for which I am responsible.  In order for it to really happen it is going to take more volunteers, and hours of diligent and hard work.  Since we are increasing the team size from 12 to 15 members, the financial end will be larger.  Does our church have what it takes to come up with $30,000?  And can we ask of our parishioners, friends and families to give yet again in less than a year?  It will take a great deal of planning, and a heap of faith.  Please pray that I can give this all up to God and let Him make the decisions and plans.

Hay haws it going? Today we went to hermano pedro (orphanage) and that was one of the hardest things in my life to do. We stand outside and Dick Rutgers told us about him and how he got involved and that was cool. Then we went inside and we when and saw some of the kids and then things got hard. We went to the babies and then we were expected to hold them; I could not do that. I don’t know why I just couldn’t. v In the end i “played” soccer with a kid in a walker that can kick my rear. I’m wired that when we go back it will be as or harder or me.

Hello ! I wish you could see all of the things we have seen. We’ve been here less than a day, but I already love Guatemala. Even our hotel is amazing. Although it is raining, it is warm and we’re eating breakfast under cover in the courtyard. The food is great; they gave us eggs, beans and fried plantains, as well as the “ best watermelon on earth”. Now I’m not a watermelon fan, but even i thought it was pretty good.

I am totally enjoying the company of everyone, especially my “roommates” Marlene, Sharron and Emma. Oh my goodness, I think we were all a little loopy last night. Emma had a sudden fear of cockroaches after Marlene told her that they are in every tropical country. Emma wanted to leave the lights on all night to keep them away, but we finally convinced her that they weren’t gonna bug her. She swears she heard them moving last night, but I have yet to hear or even see a single bug. Well I guess I have to go get my prayer book, everyone is done with breakfast ( desayuno) and we’re getting ready for eucharist out in the courtyard. Adios!

I am sitting here in the open air courtyard outside our rooms watching the rain fall. I am just in awe of the incredible beauty. It was dark when we arrived in Antigua last night so I couldn’t tell how rich and green everything is. All the flowers are in bloom and the colors are so vibrant.

Surprisingly I slept really well. I think I was the first one out in our room. Luckily, we are all readers before bed so that worked out really well. I woke up this morning to the sound of beautiful Guatemalan women outside in the courtyard making and selling the most amazing textiles. Good thing I haven’t had a chance to get any small casallas (I don’t think that is how the money is spelled, but you get the idea).

Well now I am going to eat breakfast and then be off to church..

This morning Brad, Josh and I woke up to the horrible sound of josh’s foghorn alarm after not being able to fall asleep until about 1 or 2 in the morning, Guatemalan time. We arrived in Guatemala about 8, Guatemalan time. Customs was quick, and only Cathy was tested for swine flu. Dick and his friend whose name escapes me right now drove us all around Guatemala city to take us to the BK, and wow! I am glad none of us were driving, there are almost no rules! People were getting cut off, and I didn’t see anyone use
a blinker. On our way to Antigua we saw a guy laying on the side of the road. Ted asked Dick if we should stop and see, but he said that if we stopped, the police would think we did it. After claiming our beds, brad and I walked around the compound a little, went to our room with Josh, and listened to music and talked until about 1. We woke up and took showers, and now it’s time for breakfast…

Hello from Dallas Texas!! I miss you all already!! The plane ride is ok. Its kind of boring, but reading makes the time go by! Last night I was at my boy-friends party and slept the night away. I got up at 5:00 in the morning to catch a 10:15 flight. Crazy, huh? Anyway, the plane ride isn’t as bad as usual. We were supposed to arrive at 3:15 in Dallas but the pilot was having some technical difleculties so we are so we ,are now, arriving at 3:55. Can believe
only one more hour till Guatemala? I’m so excited!! I will write back tomorrow. You will be in my prayers!! See you all later!!!

Wow, I find It hard to believe that Just earlier today I was asleep, safe ; warm in my bed, with my cell phone and laptop available for me to use whenever I wanted, and now I am on a plane, headed to Guatemala, armed with only my IPod nano and books to entertain me for the next couple hours on the plane. Originally my father, Kelly and I were supposed to share 3 seats right next to each other. Thankfully Emma volunteered to take my Dads place and Sandwich between Kelly & Me. Luckily our trip has had only 1 minor Setback , the plane was delayed 25 minutes. I
can’t wait to get to Guatemala now! I none a feeling it will be like boy scout camp, can’t wait to get there, can’t wait to get home once you get there. I Didn’t sleep well last night, so goodnight, I am going to sleep, Blog ya later!

Well what an exciting morning! Remind me never to use an automated Kiosk again. Brad and I took a Shuttle Express van to the airport and managed to pull in right behind Cathy, Ted and Emma – not only that, but Tom and Josh pulled up right next to us. I felt a lot better once our group was united (safety in numbers I guess) at least until the kiosk refused to accept my “documents”. Thank goodness for Bill, he kept the situation under control and I was
able to relax a bit.

Once we were all through customs and back together I had no worries. And besides, there was a conveniently located Starbucks just after the check point.

Brad is doing great. He was a little freaked out by the take-off, but really seemed to enjoy himself once we were in the air. Mt. Rainer looked amazing! With nothing to see for a while except for clouds I think I can finally relax with a book and some Celtic flutes. Actually having learned my lesson at SeaTac, maybe I will go to the restroom before I forget and it is time to land!

The June 14 commissioning service went so well! Thank you to Hosanna, the Chancel Choir, Blue Angels, Fr. Scot, Marcia and Tony Banks, Anna Wheeler, Scott Randall, the TLC committee and our amazing parish. The music was wonderful, the communion bread the team made the night before was actually edible, and the response from the congregation was enthusiastic
and supportive. The TLC committee was kind enough to fix tacos for the reception after the service.

Yum, yum! And, the parish managed to raise $2500 for our trip in under an hour. Again, thank you St. John's for your love and support. We will keep you posted!

Thank you so much for your prayers. It looks like the orphanage is now open to volunteers, so we should be able to spend time with the children during the week, praise God! Unfortunately the ministry of education has closed all schools until July 1, so we won’t be able to offer our one day VBS. However, we will be able to add a second day at the home building site. Please pray for our safety during travel, and that we look to our Lord for guidance as we serve.
