Our speaker will be the Rev. Ben Pascal, 42-year-old Senior Pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and son of regular Men’s Group attendee Bob Pascal. Ben will share with us his 2019 sabbatical, which included time living with Benedictine monks at Big Sur, California; exploring the ancient Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Ethiopia with his family; and learning from Roman Catholic Rwandan priest, Father Ubald, while traveling with him in Rwanda.
Ben was raised as an Episcopalian (his grandfather Fr. John Vruwink was the rector at St. Thomas, Medina for many years) and graduated from the University of Washington with a business degree in 2000. Three days after graduating, Ben took off for Wyoming to ski. There is a great 2014 article in the Jackson Hole News and Guide, when Ben was named the Senior Pastor, that starts as follows:
The newly installed senior pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole first showed up at the church that would change his life as a long-haired 23-year-old ski bum looking for a Sunday night worship service that turned out to not exist.
Instead, he and his friend came in the middle of a youth group service for teenagers. Rather than ride the awkward moment out the door, Pascal offered to use his college and high school experience leading youth groups to help out.
Ben stayed and spent a few years working full time at the church leading family and youth programming. Then he moved back to Seattle and attended night classes to earn his ordination while working in the business world by day. With his Master of Divinity in hand, Ben, his wife Addie and daughter Nina moved back to Jackson Hole where he rejoined PCJH as Associate Pastor in September 2010. Ben and Addie now have three children.
Miguel Ortega is taking the lead on dinner but can use help. Please let Duane Kovar (firstname.lastname@example.org) know if you plan to attend so that we can plan for food. It should be a special evening and we are looking forward to seeing you there!
